7.4.1. Project Manager, Owner and Sponsor
Evaluation is assumed to be initiated by the “owner” of the project in some way |
The Project Owner, sometimes also designated as the Project Manager, is ultimately responsible for the evaluation, and the role could range from an oversight through to close involvement.
At this stage it could be useful to define and differentiate the roles of Project Sponsor and Project Manager, although the roles could be covered by a single person in certain projects, especially simpler or smaller ones.
The Project Sponsor provides or facilitates the resources for a project.
- The project sponsor is the advocate for its existence
- Defines the criteria for the project’s success
- Determines the success or otherwise of the project
The Project Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of the key aspects of a project.
- Planning what needs to be done
- Ensuring work is to the required standard
- Coordinating and motivating team members
- Ensuring programme and budget compliance
- Identifying and implementing required changes
- Identifying and managing risk
